In Brief

Call-to-Action!

Act now for farm workers.

FLOC has tried over two years now to get Reynolds American to improve the conditions of tobacco harvesters in the fields of the South.

Betsy Atkins is a board member at Reynolds, but despite her encouragement, Reynolds CEO, Susan Ivey, still refuses any dialogue with FLOC about the terrible conditions under which tobacco harvesters labor.

Tell Betsy Atkins to resign.

Atkins also sits on the board of Chico’s, a woman’s clothing retailer committed to ethical sourcing. We believe Atkins commitment doesn’t end when she puts on her Reynolds hat. Her resignation would signal in concrete terms her commitment to ethical sourcing and for justice for farm workers.

Click here to send a fax to Betsy Atkins asking her resign in protest.

    NC HOPE Coalition www.nchope.org

The North Carolina Hear Our Public Employees (HOPE) Coalition is an organization founded to advocate for the restoration of contract rights for state, county and municipal employees. The NC State AFL-CIO is proud to be a core member of the HOPE Coalition.

Since 1959, state law has expressly forbidden governments from entering into collective bargaining agreements with their employees. G.S. 95-98 was signed into law that year at the behest of municipal leaders and the State Attorney General, with the backing of textile mill owners, who feared unionized law enforcement officers would be less likely to play strike busters during organizing drives at their plants.

Almost 50 years later, G.S. 95-98 continues to deny public employees in our state the same rights and freedoms of workers in the private sector to negotiate wages and treatment with their employers. Repeal has been and continues to be a major item on our legislative agenda.
