First became union activist in her early 20s in New York City as a telephone operator for NY Telephone. In those days there were "women's jobs" and "men's jobs". The women had two Company Unions and the men were in CWA. Involved in an organizing campaign to get the women into CWA; it took 3 tries before CWA won. Later worked for New York City and was a member and shop steward for AFSCME. Moved to Asheville in the early 1980s and became a part-time organizer for AFSCME in the 1990s trying to organize Asheville City Workers. Served as Recording Secretary and then President of the Western NC CLC. Currently a member of IUE-CWA Local 188. A long-time member of the Coalition of Labor Union Women, the National Organization of Women and NARAL Pro-Choice America. |
